Also known as state and local bonds, municipal bonds are long-term debt instruments that are issued by state and local governments to finance expenditures on big and important projects such as roads, hospitals, and schools. Transactions on these bonds are monitored by layers of rules and regulations. However, the most outstanding feature of these bonds is that they are exempt from federal taxes and from state taxes if purchased in the issuing state.
Factors to Consider in Buying Municipal Bonds
Buying municipal bonds isn’t a question of how to buy it but a question on whether it is really the most profitable thing to do. Given the huge popularity of these bonds, buying them may prove to be a step in the right direction.. However, if you have doubts then the following factors should help you to decide on whether or not to buy, and what bonds to buy:
- The level of supply and demand for the bond. Following economics’ basic law, this is the most important element to look at.
- The credibility of the bond’s issuer. You may not want to end up being a victim of a fraudulent trader.
- The prevailing interest level of the munis. This will help you figure out how much you’d earn if you proceed with your investment.
- The bond’s performance in the municipal bond market. This will give you a record of the performance of the bond you’re about to purchase.
- The possibility of finding other investors willing to buy the bonds. Just in case you want to give them up, you wouldn’t want to be holding bonds that are preferred by no one.
- The maturity of the bond. This refers to the length of time it would take before you can reap the fruits of your investment.
